Algeria, also known as the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria is ranked as the second largest country in Africa. Located in the north of Africa, it belongs to the group of countries that make up the Maghreb states. Algeria is approximately 919,600 sq miles or 6 times the size of the state of California. Algeria shares its borders with Tunisia and Libya to the East, Niger and Mali to the South, Mauritania to the West and Morocco lies to the Northwest. The population is approximately 35,000,000.

Algeria was under the Ottoman control and then later the French colonize the country. In 1830 The French invaded Algeria and setup a colony, sending hundreds of thousand settlers to the country. In 1962 after a bloody campaign Algeria won her independence from France. The capital of Algeria is Algiers and it is located along the Northern cast of the country.
